Jameel Bridgewater Artist Residency
Artist Residency: Jameel Bridgewater
Jameel used his time at SCD to transform a space into a "residence" that's both a studio and a shared space. In the four weeks, He designed and produced a series of objects that reference the University Of Illinois archives, connecting past and present generations.
The project is inspired by A Home of Their Own, which is a look back at the African American student experience on campus during the 1930s and 40s, and the community members that gave them room, board, and additional means of support. Jameel is interested in visiting the university archives that include: the Guide to African-American Research Resources; the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center Subject File; the Albert Lee Papers; and the Negro Matriculants List to learn more about these students and identify through lines in their experience across time. Jameel designed objects inspired by this research and hosted open studios to share his findings and works in progress.
