How Siebel Has Transformed My College Experience

Hello! My name is Chris Edison and I am a member of SCD’s Marketing Concierge Team! For this week’s issue I wanted to take a step back and reflect on how SCD has been an integral part in both my academic and professional growth. Working on the marketing team has given me a different perspective on SCD as a whole since I get to see in real time how the building is used by thousands of other students in the same way that I use it, while also building a skill set in promoting SCD to those who are unaware of it. In addition to this, all of my club meetings are hosted here at SCD, which provides us an ample amount of space to come together and cultivate our knowledge as a collective. I also utilize SCD space to study from time to time, giving me the proper environment to get quality schoolwork done.

As a member of SCD’s marketing team, I have been tasked with creating social media content that promotes everything we offer alongside helping to plan and run events. When I first started working here, I created a new Instagram series with my team called “Siebel Secrets” where we cover the lesser known facts about SCD and shed light on any mysteries. Working on this series was extremely fun and taught me how to take initiative when filming.

A recent event that I planned for SCD was our Jeopardy night that was co-hosted by Design for America (DFA). During the planning of this event, I learned how to account for every possible hiccup and how challenging it is to secure RSVP’s. In the end, the event ended up being really successful and had about 50 people show up, which was extremely rewarding to see.

I also am heavily involved on the American Advertising Federation (AAF). With over 400+ members, SCD has been a big help in allowing us to meet and is the home to all of our club meetings. In AAF, I am on the executive board in charge of co-running one of our twelve agencies. In the agency I am in charge of all of AAF’s internal branding as it relates to photography, videography, and graphic design, which has allowed me to strengthen my skill set in these fields while also learning how to lead a team and provide quality feedback. A project that I worked on for AAF that I was extremely proud of was for our showcase event this April, where I designed the logo, pamphlets, stickers, and event slideshows while also playing a larger role in setting up the event room.

Lastly, SCD has been a great place for me to study in and get quality work done. When I do my homework in SCD, I feel motivated to get work done since because of how aesthetically pleasing the building is. I also love the fact that there are white boards and post-it notes at every corner, which allows me to let my ideas flow freely and work out my thoughts. The open floor plan also contributes to the study environment, giving you a look at dozens of other students that are locked in as much as you, keeping you on track from getting distracted. The wide variety of seating areas also makes SCD a great place for collaboration, whether it’s working on a group project or conducting group study sessions.

In conclusion, I could not imagine a campus without SCD, and am extremely grateful that we have been blessed with such an amazing space!
