My First Week on the Concierge Marketing Team
My name is Annika Alfaro. I’m a senior, majoring in Classics and Comparative Literature with a minor in Art and Design. This is my fourth week working as a Marketing Concierge at the Siebel Center for Design, and it’s been a wonderful experience so far. I am one of the only team members without a background in advertising/communications/marketing. Luckily, Emily took a chance on me, and I’m incredibly grateful.
When I arrived at my first shift, I was undeniably nervous. The sleek SCD building seemed daunting and foreign. I couldn’t imagine that in a few short weeks it would feel like a second home where my creativity thrives and I find community. I worried that without a technical background in marketing, I wouldn’t be able to contribute meaningfully, but I was welcomed by my fellow concierge team members with open arms and bright smiles. As we sat and brainstormed ways to effectively interact with our audience, I realized the unique perspective I brought was valuable!
Each shift has looked a little different, so there’s no such thing as a boring day here. My daily duties can range from collaborating with my team members to develop new web content, filming engaging videos for our social media accounts, covering events happening in the building, and tabling. I’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to flex my creative muscles in a new way.
Although I’ve only been here a short time, I’ve grown so much professionally and personally. Each day at SCD presents a new opportunity to develop skills that would be difficult to acquire otherwise. Many of which are directly applicable to the career that awaits me after graduation. Many humanities majors know all too well that it’s difficult to land full-time jobs without a major directly correlated to an industry or career. Student employment opportunities, such as this one, provide valuable professional development. Personally, I would go as far as to say that this job has changed the trajectory of my life, and I can’t wait to see how the rest of my time here unfolds.
