Discover what you can do in the SCD Labs or learn a new skill with our Maker Workshops. These activities will get you started with a variety of media, tools, and design skills to help you on your creative journey.
Poster Printing with the Large Format Printer
Date: Monday, September 9, 2024, 5pm
Location: The Shop at SCD (Lower Level)
Cost: FREE
Learn to create your own Dorm Decor with our large format printer! Choose from some pre-made poster packages or come prepared with art you want to print, up to 3 posters per person during the event!
- Posters should be saved in PDF format and sent to scdqueue@gmail.com for easiest processing
- While we encourage students to be creative, please refrain from printing explicit or offensive materials during this event
Collages and Vision Boards
Date: Wednesday, September 11, 2024, 5pm
Location: The Shop at SCD (Lower Level)
Cost: FREE
Start the semester off right with a fun and creative social event where we make decorative collages and vision boards for the Fall 2024 semester! Take a moment to relax and make friends while setting your goals for the upcoming semester. Materials, glue, and boards will be provided but feel free to bring anything you want for your collage/vision board!
Intro to Woodworking -
Push Sticks
Date: Monday, September 16, 2024, 5pm
Location: The Shop at SCD (Lower Level)
Cost: FREE
Learn the basic safety and uses of various woodshop tools and equipment in the making of your own push stick! Push sticks are a safety tool used for machines such as table saws, band saws, and radial arm saws. This workshop will give you the skills needed to get started in woodworking and leave you with a handmade tool to use during your next visit.
- This event covers the basic introduction of Joinery Lab machines
- This workshop has a capacity of 12 students
- This workshop requires general orientation of the Shop to be completed before you can participate
Intro to Woodworking -
Salad Tongs
Date: Monday, September 23, 2024, 5pm
Location: The Shop at SCD (Lower Level)
Cost: FREE
Following your introductory workshop to woodworking, join us as we apply our knowledge and skills to create a great beginner project to use at home! Learn to make a simple pair of salad tongs- great for personal use, a housewarming gift, and other applications.
- This workshop uses Joinery Lab machines
- This workshop requires general orientation of the Shop to be completed before you can participate
Bookbinding
Date: Wednesday, October 2, 2024, 5pm
Location: The Shop at SCD (Lower Level)
Cost: $7.99
Learn the traditional art of Japanese Stab Binding and create your own notebook during this presentation and interactive workshop. Learn two different stitches to bind your notebook and choose from our collection of magazines and decorative materials for the covers- or bring your own!
- This workshop requires payment of 7.99 to obtain the bookbinding kits; using other kits are not recommended due to the demonstration specifications
Origami
Date: Wednesday, October 9, 2024, 5pm
Location: The Shop at SCD (Lower Level)
Cost: FREE
Relax and enjoy learning the ancient art of paper folding at SCD. Learn at least three different types of folds with opportunities to learn more after the initial demonstration. No previous experience required, origami paper is provided.
Halloween Costume
Photo Booth

Have a great Halloween costume you want to remember? Get free photos taken of yourself or a group at the media studio! Choose from various green screen backgrounds and have a blast making memories with your friends.

Pop-Up Cards

Want to make a card for Parents Day? What about a fun holiday card? A birthday card? Come learn how to make simple pop-up cards that you can customize for any occasion. Templates for parent-day and Halloween will be provided but don’t be afraid to get creative and crafty with us for this card making event!
Painting

Need a break from all the homework? Socialize and relax for our painting event where you can learn the basics of how to mix colors, prepare a canvas, and start a painting! Bring your friends and wear a t-shirt you don’t mind getting dirty! Supplies provided.
Pumpkin Laser-Carving
Date: Monday, November 18, 2024, 5pm
Location: The Shop at SCD (Lower Level)

Let's make some fun Autumnal Decor together through pumpkin carving! Come learn about our laser lab space through a demonstration carving with the lasers! Learn how the lasers work while painting and carving your pumpkins.

Papercrafts
Date: Wednesday, December 4, 2024, 5pm

Take a break from Finals prep with some fun winter-themed paper crafts. Make some snowflakes, birds, and cards with various materials provided. A relaxed setting where you can choose to follow along a demonstration or make whatever you want!
