Lab Training
The first step to using the equipment at SCD is to complete our General Orientation on Canvas.

Calling All Makers and Creators!
Whether you're a seasoned fabricator, a novice wanting to get your hands dirty in a safe and welcoming environment, or somewhere in between, the labs at SCD have the tools, equipment, and training required to bring your designs to life.
When are The Shop and the Media Studio open?
The Shop and the Media Studio are open for business every Tuesday - Sunday from 4pm-10pm when classes are in session. The schedule may vary due to holidays, school breaks, etc.
Does it cost anything to use the equipment? Do you have materials available for use or sale?
There is no charge for equipment operation or use of the Media Studio! We only charge for materials that you use. We provide basic materials for purchase. You are welcome to bring your own materials, just check in with a staff member beforehand to make sure it is safe to use with our equipment.
I can't wait to make something! How can I start using the equipment and spaces??
Everything starts by checking in with the front desk in The Shop. Upon entering the Shop on the Lower Level of SCD, check in with staff at the front desk to determine lab, studio, and equipment use statuses. They'll get you set up from there.
Is training required, and what tools require training?
We have organized our equipment into categories based on the level of training required for you to use them safely. Some tools are available to you as soon as you get your account set up with us, and others require additional training with our team. Training begins with a general orientation and training modules available on our Canvas training course online, followed by in-person training to get you started on the equipment. Training is available on any of our tools and equipment during Open Lab hours, 4p-10p, Tuesdays-Sundays, when classes are in session.

Our shop team doesn’t do project work for guests,
we provide training, creative problem-solving help, and will learn side-by-side with a guest if they bring us a new challenge.
And if we aren't able to help a guest accomplish their goals here at SCD, we’ll do our best to point them to other resources on campus or in the community that may be better equipped to help. Through our Maker Network and Concierge service, we aim to make it easy for students to navigate the many resources available across campus and the community.
