The 'Heart of Creation' at Illinois

The new Siebel Center for Design is one component of a larger cross-campus, multidisciplinary effort to harness the potential of design thinking and design learning in our teaching, research and engagement. Through this effort, we will channel our students’ outstanding talents to develop expertise, passion and creativity toward issues and lives of consequence. Students from across campus and all fields of study will explore ideas and master skills through action—immersing, designing, making, doing.

The Center's mission is to bring the campus together through a cyber-physical network: faculty and students, in spaces throughout the campus, connecting with communities and challenges around the world. The network will facilitate collaboration and learning across disciplines, realities, and cultures, through diverse experiences bold in problem framing, rich in design thinking, and uninhibited in risk taking.

The Center will have facilities for instruction, observation and immersion to identify opportunities for design, for ideation and collaboration, for prototyping to test ideas, and for communication to a variety of audiences, on- and off-campus.

The Facility

It will provide program space and will serve as the central station learning across disciplines, realities and cultures. The Siebel Center for Design will embody our institutional commitment to world-class education and discovery with societal purpose and relevance, as we engage the world—to act, to lead, to change.

The Siebel Center for Design will equip students with new and exceptional sets of skills, fostered by a culture of multi- and transdisciplinary education and student-led problem discovery and problem solving.

Design on Campus

The Siebel Center for Design will serve as a hub that inspires our campus community to discuss, question, dream, invent, create and innovate. The Center is envisioned to convene people, immerse them in understanding meaningful challenges for which they design solutions, and connect them to a network of campus, community and global resources.
